Thank you, Madam Lt. Governor. Good Morning Everyone.

Today is a very special day for all of us, as we gather to celebrate the Transgender Day of Visibility. This day marks an important moment for our community, where we come together to recognize and honor the contributions of transgender individuals to our society. Today, the state of Connecticut is raising the transgender flag over the state capitol for the first time. This is a truly momentous occasion that we should all celebrate and cherish. This is a historic moment that reflects our commitment to diversity, equality, and human rights.

But this is not just a celebration for the transgender community, this is a celebration for all of us. It is a testament to the progress we have made in recognizing and respecting the diversity of human experience and identity. It is a collective effort that requires us to stand in solidarity with each other, listen, learn, and work together to create a better world.

Governors across the nation from North Dakota’s Doug Burgum to Kansas’ Laura Kelly to right here in Connecticut with Ned Lamont are standing up for transgender rights. Governor Burgum vetoed a bill that targeted transgender students’ pronouns.

Governor Kelly vetoed, for a third time, a bill that banned transgender athletes from girls’ and women’s sports. Governor Lamont signed legislation outlawing the ‘panic defense’ in which defendants are barred from saying the victim’s orientation or gender expression caused them to panic and commit crimes.

This moment is not just about raising a flag, it is about raising awareness, empathy, and understanding. So let us use this occasion as an opportunity to start a dialogue, to ask questions, to listen to each other, and to work together to solve the big issues facing our society. Let us embrace our differences, celebrate our

diversity, and continue to build a world that is more just, more equitable, and more inclusive for all. Living out the phrase: tikkun olam — Repair/improve the world.

Today, let us celebrate the courage, resilience, and strength of our community committed to creating a stronger future for all. Thank you for joining us in this important celebration. Together, we can make a difference.
