Good Evening:

Thank you to the Mayor & Alders who attended the various pride events around the city this week.

Members of the Council tonight for the 5th year in a row you have the Pride in the City resolution in front of you. In the last half-decade, we have made so much progress — raising our Human Rights Campaign Municipality Equality Index score by over 30 points to a 85.

In the last year, we were successful in advocating for the development and funding for the state Department of Education to create a model curriculum inclusive of LGBTQ+ studies that will be available for use by school districts in 2023, thanks to our city’s delegation leadership.

Each year builds on the next — This year’s resolution with section four aims for the city to further increase our score. In the next year, the focus will be on community outreach, engagement, and strengthening municipal services. Collaborating with various organizations and agencies so then we get into the top tier — 90+ points!

In addition to community engagement, there are also important legislative priorities that this council can take like expanding our city contractor & non-discrimination policy, continuing to foster a more inclusive workplace, and improving public accommodations.

In closing, please vote Yes on tonight’s resolution so then we can continue to make progress together — in a bipartisan way — to make New Britain a more open and accepting community.
